Shedding Light on Cellulite

Have you ever had that lumpy or dimpled skin appearance on your thighs, hips and buttocks?  Then you have cellulite in your body.  Cellulite is a layer of fat underneath the skin in the subcutaneous fat layers.  Cellulite is unique because it is structured into specific chambers and is linked by tissues around it making the skin look dimpled.

Women are the major targets of cellulite because of several factors.  90% of post-adolescent women will have cellulite development in their lifetime.  Men are less likely to develop cellulite.  Thighs, buttocks, hips and the abdomen are the most common areas of cellulite development among women.  Both obese and lean women develop cellulite so it should not be associated with obesity.

Hormonal changes in women play an important role in cellulite production.  Puberty, pregnancy, menopause, and even birth control pills can create hormonal changes that are usually associated with cellulite development.  The complex physiological changes that occur in the subcutaneous fat layer can result in cellulite formation.

Although having cellulite is a perfectly normal part of human makeup, so many women do not want to have unsightly bumps and lumps on their bodies.  And a market for cellulite reduction was introduced which paved the way for cellulite reduction treatments including cellulite cream with slimming seaweed as well.

Many doctors do recommend eating a well balanced diet and getting regular exercise to help in the reduction of these fatty deposits—although it may not totally disappear.  Maintaining the proper body weight will reduce noticeable fat lumps and can help smoothen the orange peel look of the skin.

There are also dietary supplements that claim to have cellulite reduction effects.  Supplements that contain ingredients like gingko biloba, grape see, bioflavinoids, fish oil, and other extracts can boost the body’s metabolism and improve blood circulation which in turn will break down fat deposits and reduce cellulite.  While these claims have no scientific basis and they have there are still many who support the idea of adding dietary supplements to their daily routine.  Caution should be taken with these dietary supplements.  Be sure to check out the ingredients because they may pose greater threats to your health.

Body wraps are one of the most common methods of cellulite treatment.  There are machines that massage specific areas of the skin and claim to reduce cellulite visibility.
