Home Remedies for Nail Fungus
Onychomycosis is one of the more common and contagious of the diseases that affect most Americans of today. This infection is more commonly experienced by athletes or the athletic types who are always active and sweating.
Nail fungus, the common name for onychomycosis, affects the nails by penetrating underneath the nail plate and settling itself on the nail bed. Since the nail bed is protected by the nail plate, it is therefore difficult to reach the infection for treatment. As the nail fungus grows and spreads underneath the nail plate, the nail would show symptoms of discoloration and would become dull and brittle. Nail fungus is not a life threatening disease. However, if left unattended for a long time, nail fungus could eventually destroy the nail and thus causing the fingers to be susceptible to the entrance of microorganisms that would cause a variety of other infections.
The prescribed treatment by doctors for nail fungus involves medication with anti-fungal drugs which are expensive and are known to produce side effects. These prescribed anti-fungal drugs are so expensive that people tend to just ignore the infection causing the infection to spread further. Fortunately, there are homemade remedies that have been proven to treat nail fungus effectively. These remedies are both practical and convenient since most of them can be purchased over the counter at your local supermarkets or drug stores. Here is a short list of these proven home remedies for nail fungus.
1. Acidophilus beer soak – This is one of the most effective treatment methods for nail fungus which involves the acidophilus bacteria. The acidophilus bacteria make the soak solution acidic enough to kill any fungus living in the soaked nail. A mixture of acidophilus beer and vinegar is used as the soak solution. Infected nails should be soaked in the solution 30 minutes every day for a month.
2. Hydrogen Peroxide and Bleach Treatment – Bleach and Hydrogen Peroxide are both chemical solutions that provide an oxidative therapy for eradicating nail fungus. The oxidation is responsible for destroying the cells of the fungi and disrupting the fungi’s ability to replicate itself. Nails can be soaked in a solution containing a capful of bleach mixed with a gallon of water for a half hour daily for several weeks. If using hydrogen peroxide, saturate a cotton ball with 3% hydrogen peroxide solution and cover the infected nail with the cotton until the solution dries up. It should be noted however, that proper precautions should be taken when using these solutions since higher dosages could cause irritations to the skin.
3. Vicks Vapor Rub – Little is known about the true effect of Vicks on the treatment of nail fungus yet a lot of people are claiming its effectiveness in eradicating nail fungus from their system. For treatment, apply a generous amount of Vicks on the infected nail then cover it with a sock or a glove for a couple of hours. The best time to do this is before sleeping at night. Most people who used Vicks claimed that the eradication of the nail fungus only lasted for a few weeks.
A few of the home made remedies that have been proven effective had been mentioned above. However, it is important to take note a remedy that worked for one person doesn’t necessarily mean that it would also be effective for another. Cases of fungal nail infection may differ from one person to the next and therefore a variety of remedies might be needed for treatment. In any case, it is important to be diligent in the treatment to completely eradicate nail fungus.
